Van Halen: Tone, Playing Style & Fun Facts

Masterclass – Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 04:30 PM

€15.00

Eddie Van Halen was not just a guitarist—he was a turning point. Before him, after him. His sound, technique, and approach redefined what it meant to play rock guitar, and they continue to do so today.

In this masterclass, you will explore three fundamental dimensions of his artistic universe.

The Sound: What is the “brown sound,” really? We will analyze the tonal characteristics that made his sound instantly recognizable: from his homemade guitars to Marshall Plexi heads run at reduced voltage with a Variac, from the legendary MXR Phase 90 to the MXR Flanger, all the way to the Echoplex—used even as a boost. A signal chain that no one had ever conceived in that way before.

The Playing: The pillars of his technique: harmonics, tapping, tremolo bar work, and all those elements that, when combined, created a unique and unmistakable style. Not just the techniques themselves, but the logic behind every choice. A journey to the roots of an approach that forever changed the way electric guitar is understood.

Behind the Scenes: Stories, anecdotes, and surprising insights into his musical life—details that reveal the person behind the legend and helped build the Van Halen myth.

Studying Van Halen does not mean imitating him—it means understanding how he thought, in order to find your own voice.
This is the true goal of the masterclass: using his universe as a tool to develop a personal, authentic, and conscious style.

The session will be led by Donato Begotti
Donato Begotti is one of Italy’s leading experts on the guitar language of Eddie Van Halen, and the author of The Brown Sound Experience, the first video course series entirely dedicated to his style. Voted among the best Italian rock guitarists, with over 2,500 live performances and 250 clinics to his name, he has been teaching guitar since 1993. He is the author of 23 guitar books and founder of the Rock Guitar Academy, the first academy in Europe specialized in rock guitar education.

His strength lies not only in technical knowledge, but in his ability to make even the most complex concepts accessible and playable.

Eddie Van Halen has been his greatest influence: this masterclass is the result of years of study, passion, and deep respect for one of the most influential musicians in the history of the guitar.
